Forget Russia, Worry About China in 2020

The idea that President Donald Trump conspired with the Russians to take the presidency, something that sounds like the plot of a Richard Condon novel, has finally be laid to rest with the Mueller Report and the subsequent testimony before two House committees. However, while the Russians did work to influence the 2016 election and have set out to do the same for 2020, the Washington Free Beacon reports a far more serious effort being mounted by the Chinese.

“China is conducting an aggressive disinformation and influence campaign designed to block the re-election of President Trump in 2020, according to a dissident Chinese billionaire who until recently was close to senior Beijing leaders.

“Guo Wengui, an exiled Chinese real estate tycoon-turned-anti-communist critic, said in an interview that details of the influence operation were disclosed recently by Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan in Beijing. The campaign has been underway since the 2018 mid-term election and involves enlisting pro-China elements inside the United States to end the Trump administration after four years.”

The motive for attempting to overthrow President Trump is obvious. Trump, according to the Chinese, has inflicted considerable damage on China through his aggressive trade policies, slapping tariffs on Chinese goods. Trump, unlike previous presidents, has treated China as an opponent, taking measures to curtail its theft of American intellectual property and conducting a military buildup to confront Beijing in the South China Sea. To put the matter simply, China would prefer to deal with a much more compliant president, which would describe just about anyone who is running as a Democrat.

Guo suggests that Beijing is using “four weapons” to attempt to undermine Trump.

The first weapon is to enlist the support of Wall Street insiders who oppose the president’s trade policies.

The second weapon is to ally with inside the beltway lobbyists and political insiders, members of the so-called Swamp. Many of these people, Guo suggests, have already been suborned and corrupted by Chinese intelligence.

The third weapon involves the American news media and social media influencers, many of whom are disposed to hate the president and would be happy to see him gone regardless of whether or not it suits Beijing’s purposes.

The fourth weapon is to enlist the help of overseas Chinese who have grown in wealth and political influence.

It should be noted that the news media and Congressional Democrats are sounding the alarm about the much more modest Russian campaign to influence the 2020 elections, using language not heard since the McCarthy era. For the sin of opposing a flawed voting security bill, Senate Leader Mitch McConnell has been given the name “Moscow Mitch.” McConnell was obliged to take to the floor of the Senate to defend himself.

However, aside from the Free Beacon, scant reporting has taken place about the much larger, much more serious Chinese campaign to determine the outcome of the 2020 election. China has been quite flagrant about influencing every aspect of American society, from academia to the content of Hollywood films. The operation to overthrow the president of the United States is part of the overall strategy to replace America as the world’s sole superpower with China.

Trump, for his part, seems perfectly aware of what is going on. He tweeted:

“China is doing very badly, the worst year in 27 – was supposed to start buying our agricultural product now – no signs that they are doing so. That is the problem with China, they just don’t come through. Our Economy has become MUCH larger than the Chinese Economy is the last 3 years…My team is negotiating with them now, but they always change the deal in the end to their benefit. They should probably wait out our Election to see if we get one of the Democrat stiffs like Sleepy Joe. Then they could make a GREAT deal, like in the past 30 years, and continue to ripoff the USA, even bigger and better than ever before. The problem with them waiting, however, is that if & when I win, the deal that they get will be much tougher than what we are negotiating now…or no deal at all. We have all the cards, our past leaders never got it!”

Guo used to be a friend and ally of Chinese leader Xi Jinping but now is on the outs with Beijing because he has spoken out against corruption in the Beijing government.
