Hillary Clinton, former first lady, former senator, former secretary of state, and twice-failed presidential candidate, has blamed her defeat in 2016 on everything from Russian perfidy to the inherent misogyny of the American people. However, on the occasion of a new four-part (!!!) documentary of her 2016 campaign for the presidency on Hulu, Ms. Clinton released her ire on Bernie Sanders, the man who opposed her for the 2016 Democratic nomination and a real threat to take that prize on 2020.
In the documentary, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Hillary does not hold back.
“He was in Congress for years. He had one senator support him. Nobody likes him, nobody wants to work with him, he got nothing done. He was a career politician. It’s all just baloney and I feel so bad that people got sucked into it.”
Hillary beat Bernie in the 2016 primary race, by hook and crook, Sanders supporters say mainly by crook. She also has some harsh words to say about those supporters.
“I will say, however, that it’s not only him, it’s the culture around him. It’s his leadership team. It’s his prominent supporters. It’s his online Bernie Bros and their relentless attacks on lots of his competitors, particularly the women.”
To be sure, some of Bernie’s supporters are demonstrably toxic. Guerilla journalist James O’Keefe has found at least two of his staffers who want to bring the Gulag to the United States should Sanders win the presidency. The second one is quoted as saying that the guillotine should be used to take care of the rich, O’Keefe noted in a tweet.
Hillary, though, seems focused on what she perceives as misogyny on the part of Team Bernie and not their tendency to murderous totalitarianism.
“And I really hope people are paying attention to that because it should be worrisome that he has permitted this culture — not only permitted, [he] seems to really be very much supporting it. And I don’t think we want to go down that road again where you campaign by insult and attack and maybe you try to get some distance from it, but you either don’t know what your campaign and supporters are doing or you’re just giving them a wink and you want them to go after Kamala [Harris] or after Elizabeth [Warren]. I think that that’s a pattern that people should take into account when they make their decisions.”
In other words, Bernie Sanders is no better than Trump, whom Hillary also thinks is misogynistic, insulting, and just plain mean. Rewarding either Bernie or Trump with the presidency would be the same as rewarding this bad behavior, in Hillary Clinton’s mind.
According to Business Insider, Bernie Sanders was almost self-effacing where it came to Hillary’s harsh assessment of him. He told a reporter, “On a good day, my wife likes me.” Bernie Sanders’ constituents in Vermont also like him as does a considerable number of Democratic primary voters. He is vying with Joe Biden for the title of the front runner for the race for the nomination.
Misogyny and sexism are accusations that Hillary Clinton likes to throw around with wild abandon. They are her go-to charges to levy when someone criticizes her or when she loses a run for the presidency. She likes to cast herself in the role of a champion of women and girls. However, the record would seem to suggest that she honors this role more in the breach than in the observance.
A Wall Street Journal article published at the beginning of the 2016 election cycle noted that Hillary Clinton’s treatment of her husband Bill’s victims was somewhat less than supportive. She once referred to Monica Lewinsky as a “narcissistic loony toon” and a “stalker.” Paula Jones, Kathleen Willey, and Juanita Broaddrick also got their share of harsh, threatening treatment from Hillary and her cohorts.
Many still remember the case of a 12-year old rape victim name Kathy Shelton, whose life Hillary Clinton destroyed as a pro bono lawyer in the mid-1970s. Shelton was so brutalized that she was not only to have children but was rendered psychologically unable to enjoy sexual relations. Hillary convinced an Arkansas judge that Shelton fantasized about what happened to her. The rapist got off with time served.
President Trump may have been ungentlemanly toward some women and Bernie no doubt has a lot of frightening, unsocialized males on his staff. But neither man did anything like that.
