With August just around the corner and the Democratic National Convention now in sight, the city of Milwaukee is gearing up to host the expected nomination of Joe Biden as the party’s official presidential nominee. However, it seems the city may not be as equipped for such an event as they once were, at least where security and law enforcement are involved.
As the Associated Press reports, some 100 or more police agencies are now pulling out of agreements to secure and protect the four-day event, most citing the recent order to ban tear gas and pepper spray.
“A citizen oversight commission last week directed Milwaukee’s police chief to publicly account for why the department used tear gas during protests in late May and early June after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis and to change Milwaukee’s police policies to ban the use of tear gas and pepper spray. The Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission said in its order that Police Chief Alfonso Morales could be fired if he fails to comply…”
In addition, the outlet noted, “Since the Milwaukee order was issued, more than 100 law enforcement agencies in Wisconsin and across the county have decided against coming to Milwaukee.”
Most of those, according to Chief Morales, claim the new order as the main reason they will not be coming to the DNC’s aid in mid-August.
However, we don’t just have to take Morales’ word on it. Some of the refusing agencies have spoken out for themselves.
The Fond du Lac Police Chief William Lamb told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal, “We respect the Fire and Police Commission’s decision. But in this particular case, we strongly disagree with the actions they’ve taken. We believe in removing those tools, the use of chemical irritants or pepper spray, form the available resources that the law enforcement officers would have at their disposal if protests become non-peaceful would severely compromise the safety of the public and also the safety of the law enforcement officers who would be assigned to protect the DNC.”
Similarly, the Deputy Chief of West Allis, Robert Fletcher, says, “Our concern is that in the event protests turn non-peaceful, such a policy would remove tools from officers that may otherwise be legal and justifiable to utilize in specific situations.”
And if the police are no longer allowed to use non-lethal resources like tear gas and pepper spray, what are they to use? It’s not as though the Commission gave them new tools to replace these. Instead, they leave them with extremely limited options that mostly include the firing of much more lethal weapons.
Now, this year’s convention is sure to be a bit unique. Firstly, due to the ongoing pandemic, the usual crowd of about 50,000 will dwindle to only about 300. This means that the convention itself doesn’t need nearly as large of a space. It also means that fewer officers on the ground will likely be required.
However, it most certainly does not mean that protests aren’t expected.
As we all know, this year’s election is very controversial. And not just between Democrats and Republicans. There is also a massive divide within the Democratic Party right now, and Biden being nominated instead of a more liberal candidate, such as Bernie Sanders, is very much a part of that.
Furthermore, it the far left and the very same people who oppose Biden’s nomination, that is pushing for continued riots and violence throughout the nation. Therefore, it would only make sense that it would be this crowd gathering outside the walls of the convention, where it seems very few police officers will be posted to make sure the Democratic elite inside aren’t harmed.
But if the Democrats want to complain about their lack of security, they have no one to blame but themselves. For the last months, we have watched our nation’s larger cities literally burn from the inside out, and the leading Democrats have done little, if anything, to stop it.
In fact, if they have done anything at all, it is to only encourage the chaos, as they continue to call for the defunding and limitation of police throughout the nation.
And such limitations are now the exact reason that police cannot defend the ever-left leaning party, not that many police would even want to after all the Democrats have put them through as of late.
